A Torbie is NOT a pattern. It’s a color combination!
In simple terms, a Torbie is a female cat who carries both the red gene and another color gene. The red gene is sex-linked, which means it is inherited differently in males and females.
How does it work?
Our Stud Phoenix is Red. Because of how the red gene is inherited, he passes his red gene to all of his daughters, but not his sons.
* Brown Torbie: A brown female with combined with brown and red coloring.
* Blue Torbie: A female with blue and red coloring.
* The pattern stays the pattern! A Torbie can still be spotted or marbled. The red coloring does not change the cat’s underlying pattern.
Think of it this way: Spotted and marbled describe the pattern. Torbie describes the color combination. They are two completely different things!
For example, a Blue Torbie can still be a beautifully spotted Bengal. The red coloring may appear in patches or areas throughout her coat, alongside her blue coloring, while her underlying spotted pattern remains.
And yes, in the traditional genetic sense, males cannot be Torbies because Torbie requires the combination of red and another color that is typically found in females. Extremely rare genetic exceptions can occur, but they are not the norm.
Torbie/Red is the newest and rarest color in the Bengal world so there is a lot of misinformation on Google/ChatGpt. Trust your breeder on this one. Only a handful of breeders in the US can produce this color.
So, if you’re looking for a spotted Bengal, a Torbie can absolutely be spotted! You do not have to choose between a Torbie and a spotted pattern.
At Kings Dynasty Bengals, we love educating people about the fascinating genetics behind these beautiful cats!
